Electrical Troubleshooting in Arlington & Northern Virginia

Some electrical problems are obvious. Others come and go: a room that loses power only when it rains, lights that flicker at night, a breaker that trips once a week. Troubleshooting is the methodical work of finding that cause, and it's the most important thing an electrician does.

Problems that call for troubleshooting

  • Intermittent power loss in one room or on one side of the house
  • Lights that flicker or dim, especially across several rooms at once
  • A breaker that trips with no obvious pattern
  • Outlets that work some days and not others
  • Shocks or tingles from fixtures, appliances, or plumbing
  • A problem a previous repair didn't fix

How we find the fault

  1. Start with the patternWhen does it happen, what's running, what changed recently? The pattern narrows the search.
  2. Isolate the circuitWe identify which circuit or circuits are involved and what's on them.
  3. Test, don't guessVoltage and load testing at the panel and at devices locates loose connections, failing breakers, and damaged conductors.
  4. Check the serviceFlicker across the whole house can point to the utility service or main connections, which the utility may need to repair. We'll tell you which side of the meter the problem is on.

Why loose connections matter

The most common cause of intermittent problems is a loose or deteriorated connection: at a backstabbed outlet, a wire nut in a ceiling box, or a breaker terminal. Loose connections heat up under load, and heat is how electrical fires start. If you have a problem that comes and goes, don't wait for it to become constant.

Frequently asked questions

My whole house flickers. Is that my wiring or the utility?

It can be either. Whole-house flicker often points to the service entrance, the meter base, or the utility's connection, while flicker in one area usually points to a circuit inside the home. We test to tell them apart, and if it's on the utility side we'll tell you what to report to Dominion Energy, Pepco, or BGE.

What if you can't reproduce the problem during the visit?

Intermittent faults don't always show up on schedule. We test the likely failure points directly rather than waiting for the symptom, and we'll tell you honestly what we found and what we ruled out.

Can troubleshooting happen on the same visit as the repair?

Usually, yes. Once we've found the cause and you approve the price, most repairs are completed the same day.
