Circuit Breaker Repair in Arlington, VA
A breaker that trips is a safety device doing its job. The question is why it's tripping: an overloaded circuit, a short, a ground fault, or a breaker that has worn out. We find out which, and fix the cause, not just the breaker.
Why breakers trip
- Overload: too much running on one circuit, common with space heaters, window AC units, and kitchen appliances.
- Short circuit: a hot conductor touching neutral or ground, often at a damaged cord, device, or splice.
- Ground fault: current leaking to ground, which GFCI protection is designed to catch, frequently from moisture.
- Arc fault: loose or damaged wiring that sparks, detected by AFCI breakers.
- A failing breaker: breakers wear out, and a weak one can trip below its rating or fail to trip at all.
Signs a breaker needs replacing
- It won't stay reset even with everything on the circuit unplugged
- It's warm or hot to the touch, or there's a burning smell at the panel
- It looks scorched, cracked, or loose in the panel
- It never trips, even when the circuit is clearly overloaded
AFCI and GFCI breakers
Newer code requires arc-fault (AFCI) and ground-fault (GFCI) protection on many circuits. These breakers sometimes trip on older wiring or certain appliances. A nuisance trip is often the breaker detecting a real wiring problem, so we investigate before replacing anything.
When it's really a panel problem
If breakers keep failing, the panel itself may be the issue: worn bus bars, corrosion, or a panel brand with a known history of breakers that don't trip reliably. See electrical panel repair.

Frequently asked questions
Can I just replace a tripping breaker with a bigger one?
No. The breaker is sized to protect the wire on that circuit. A larger breaker lets the wire overheat before it trips, which is a fire hazard. The fix is to reduce the load or add a circuit.
How much does breaker replacement cost?
It depends on the breaker type (standard, AFCI, GFCI, dual-function) and panel brand. We'll give you an upfront price after diagnosis.
Is it safe to reset a breaker myself?
Resetting once is fine: switch it fully off, then on. If it trips again immediately, or you smell burning, leave it off and call us.
